About LED

Vision

The vision of the Local Economic Development Section of the Emnambithi/Ladysmith Municipality is to develop a people focused and cost effective municipality, providing quality services, while addressing unemployment and poverty through promotion of Agriculture, Commercial and Industrial productivity, Education, Skills Development, Tourism and Conservation.

Mission

The mission of the Local Economic Development Section of the Emnambithi/Ladysmith Municipality is to ensure community participation in all projects, improve the skills of community members, strive for financial viability, provide sustainable services and promote Local Economic Development.

Summarized Background on the Business Retention and Expansion (BR&E) Programme

Our Municipality is participating in the BR&E programme of the Department of Trade and Investment (DTI) to retain and expand existing businesses in our town. The target is to visit 20 Industrialists per annum and to ensure that they have the support of the Municipality. Further, to ensure that communication lines are open and to ensure that business is not lost.

All concerns raised by the various businesses are being attended to and reports are being forwarded to the various Departments of the Municipality to expedite same.

Local Economic Development Section Achievements

  • Applied and received funding from DBSA for Feasibility Study for the Logistic Hub to the amount of R160 000.
  • Applied and received funding from the Department Economic Development (KZN) for renovations and upgrading of SMME trading Centres to the amount of R1,7 million.
  • Commissioning of Aloe and Berg Tea Processing Plant and the production and selling of Products.
  • Participation in various Provincial and National Exhibitions to market Emnambithi / Ladysmith to potential investors and to showcase the Aloe and Berg Tea Project.
  • The extraordinary performance of the LED Section was one of the key factors in winning the Vuna Awards for Best Municipality in KZN.
  • Instrumental (driving force) in obtaining the NPDG funding of R62,5 million for the Commercial Development of Ezakheni.
  • Secured R500 000 for Aloe Project from Local Government and Traditional Affairs for purchasing of equipment
  • Secured funding from Local Government and Traditional Affairs to the amount of R1 million to implement the Pecan Nut Pilot Project.
  • Secured funding from Local Government and Traditional Affairs to the amount of R126 000 to establish the Bambanani Crop Farming Project.
  • Visited 20 Industries as part of the Business Retention and Expansion programme.
  • SMME and Cooperative Support Programme - 5 Roadshows conducted and 1 major workshop held.
  • Responsible (instrumental) for the establishing of an Animal Feed Manufacturing Company (Evertrade Feeds) in Ladysmith. Capital injection - R40 million and 50 new jobs created.
  • Implementation of Agricultural Development programme such as poultry and crop vegetable farming. Approximately 1000 informal jobs were created.
  • Approximately 250 emerging businesses have been established and supported and received training in business and financial management with the support of Government and Private Enterprise.
  • Assisted the Department of Economic Development (KZN) to host a workshop for Incentives for SMME`s in the Tourism and Manufacturing Industries.
  • Applied and received Matthews Farm as a Agri Training / SMME Centre from the Department of land Affairs.
  • Responsible (Instrumental) in the establishing of GTP Concrete Products in Emnambithi/Ladysmith. Capital injection of R60 million and 60 new jobs created.
  • Assisted the Natal Sweet Chillie Company to open a processing plant in the Ithala Industrial Estate. Capital investment R20 million and 20 permanent and 350 temporary (5 months) jobs created.
  • Applied to the National Lottery Board and received R1,28 million to build an athletics track in Ezakheni.
  • Applied to the Department Corporate Government and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) and received R2,2 million to build new trader stalls for the hawkers.
